PD Dr. Oliver Scheufler attended medical school at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany, before entering his surgical residency at the Dept. of General-, Visceral- and Vascular Surgery at Klinikum Wuppertal, University Hospital of Witten-Herdecke (Prof. Dr. H. Zirngibl).
His training in plastic surgery started at the Dept. of Hand and Plastic Surgery at Krankenhaus Zehlendorf, academic teaching hospital of the Free University of Berlin (Prof. Dr. W.E. Vaubel). In addition to his clinical training he became involved in the scientific research on techniques for breast reconstruction and published his doctoral thesis on non-invasive monitoring of skin flap perfusion in breast surgery. His training was continued at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at Markus Krankenhaus, academic teaching hospital of the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University Frankfurt (PD Dr. K. Exner), one of the oldest and most renowned institutions for plastic surgery in Germany. Based on a broad clinical education in plastic and reconstructive surgery, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the face and breast including modern microsurgical techniques became the main focus of his clinical and scientific activities. His training was supplemented by a rotation in Hand Surgery and Burn Care at the Dept. of Hand, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with Burn Unit at Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik Ludwigshafen, academic teaching hospital of the Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg (Prof. Dr. G. Germann).
After completion of his residency, he continued his academic career at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Basel University Hospital (Prof. Dr. G. Pierer). In addition to his clinical work as a consultant at Basel University Hospital and the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Notwil, he became involved in scientific projects on stem cell research and tissue engineering, published his postdoctoral thesis on vascularized bone tissue engineering in a rabbit model and received the Venia legend at the medical faculty of Basel University. He then returned to Berlin as a consultant at the Dept. of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Helios Klinikum Emil von Behring, academic teaching hospital of the Charité–University Hospital, before returning to Switzerland and joining the private practice of Dr. M.L. Farkas that he continues to the present day.
PD Dr. Oliver Scheufler is active member of several national and international societies, such as the Swiss Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SWISS PLASTIC SURGERY), the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (DGPRÄC), the Germany Society of Surgery (DGCH), the German Society of Senology, the German-speaking Working Groups on Microsurgery of the Peripheral Nerves and Vessels (DAM), the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), and the Rhinoplasty Society of Europe (RSE).
He received the Best Paper Award of the Germans Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, the Best Paper Award of the Swiss Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and was honored as Visiting Professor at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He has given more than 100 scientific lectures at national and international meetings and published more than 40 papers in scientific journals and books.
